Wall-Mounted Microwave Removal: A Step-by-Step Guide
Disclaimer: Working with electrical appliances can be dangerous. Improper handling can lead to electrical shock.
I. General Safety Precautions
Turn Off Power: Locate the microwave's circuit breaker in your electrical panel and switch it to the "OFF" position. Verify the power is off by attempting to turn on the microwave.
Clear the Area: Remove any items or loose components stored inside the microwave and clear the surrounding countertop space.
Clear the Oven: Remove the oven prior to attempting to take the microwave out.
II. Removal Steps
Locate Mounting Screws:
Wall-mounted microwaves are typically secured to the wall and/or upper cabinets with screws.
These screws may be located:
Inside the microwave cavity, near the top.
On the top of the microwave, accessible when the door is open.
On the underside of the upper cabinets, securing the microwave to the cabinet.
Disconnect the Electrical Cord:
If the microwave has a plug, unplug it from the electrical outlet.
You'll need to remove the wiring cover from the bottom or behind the grill at the top of the microwave to expose the electrical connections. Disconnect the wiring including the bare copper wire anchored to the microwave itself. Pull those wires out of the top of the microwave through the cabinet above.
Remove Mounting Screws:
Using a screwdriver, carefully remove all mounting screws.
It's helpful to have an assistant support the microwave while you remove the last few screws, as it can be heavy.
Detach the Microwave:
Carefully lift the microwave off the mounting bracket or wall.
This requires lifting the unit up & out.
Be mindful of any wires or cords that may still be attached.
Remove the Mounting Bracket (If Applicable):
If a separate mounting bracket is attached to the wall or cabinets, remove the screws securing it and detach the bracket.
Store it with the microwave with all associated hardware inside the microwave in a ziplock bag.
III. Important Considerations
Weight: Wall-mounted microwaves can be heavy. Get assistance to avoid injury.
Electrical Wires: If the microwave is hardwired, proceed with extreme caution.
Wall Damage: Be careful not to damage the wall or cabinets during removal.
Disposal: Check your local regulations for proper disposal of microwaves.
