Ladder Safety: The 4:1 Rule & Other Safety Aspects of Extension Ladders.
4:1 ladder rule is decided for job site safety. We must understand that proper ladder placement is the foundation of every use of a ladder. Always set the base 1 foot out from the wall for every 4 feet of height to ensure a stable climb.
This 4:1 ratio is the sweet spot because it creates the perfect angle. Too steep, and you risk tipping backward; too shallow, and the base could kick out. This balance keeps your weight centered and your body stable while working at heights.
The 3-rung rule: your ladder must extend 3 rungs past the roof deck. This provides a critical handhold, ensuring a safe transition when stepping onto the roof. It’s a simple OSHA-compliant step that prevents falls, as most injuries associated with ladder use is related to transitioning from a ladder to another surface.
The 3 points of contact rule: Always have either 2 hands & 1 foot, or 1 hand, and 2 feet firmly on a ladder while climbing. This triangle of support keeps your body stable and prevents sudden slips & falls.
Face the ladder: Never attempt to traverse a ladder facing away from it. By maintaining a forward facing orientation, you can react to shifts in balance. This means avoiding carrying heavy tools in your hands; use a tool belt to or shoulder pack to keep your grip free for the rungs.
