General Safety Precautions (Both Gas & Electric)

• Turn Off Power:

  • Electric: Locate the oven's circuit breaker in your electrical panel and switch it to the "OFF" position. Verify the power is off by attempting to turn on the oven.

  • Gas: Locate the gas shut-off valve behind the oven (often a yellow-handled valve on the gas line). Turn the valve perpendicular to the gas line to shut it off.

    • it's recommended to turn off the gas to the home while disconnecting gas appliances.

• Clear the Area: Remove any items stored in the oven.

• Protective Gear: Wear gloves to protect your hands.

Disconnecting an Electric Oven

1. Pull the Oven Out: Carefully pull the oven away from the wall. It may be heavy, so have someone assist you.

2. Locate the Electrical Connection: The electrical connection is usually a large, heavy-duty plug or a wired connection in a junction box at the back of the oven.

3. Unplug (If Applicable): If it's a plug, carefully unplug it.

4. Disconnect Wires (If Wired):

   • If wired, you'll need a screwdriver.

   • Carefully remove the cover of the junction box.

     • Confirm the power is off with a voltage tester.

   • Disconnect the wires, noting their positions (usually black, red, white, and green or bare copper).

   • Use wire nuts to cap the wires coming from the wall.

5. Move the Oven: With assistance, move the oven to its desired location or for disposal.

Disconnecting a Gas Oven

1. Pull the Oven Out: Carefully pull the oven away from the wall. It may be heavy, so have someone assist you.

2. Locate the Gas Connection: The gas connection is a yellow flexible gas line or a rigid pipe connected to the back of the oven.

3. Disconnect the Gas Line:

   • Use two wrenches to disconnect the gas line. One wrench to hold the pipe coming out of the wall, and the other to turn the nut on the flex line.

   • Important: Cap the gas line coming from the wall with a gas-rated cap to prevent leaks.

4. Disconnect the Electrical Connection (If Applicable): Many gas ovens also have an electrical connection for the igniter and lights. If it's not a plug that plugs into an outlet, follow the steps in the electric oven section to disconnect these wires.

5. Move the Oven: With assistance, move the oven out of the way to its desired location or for disposal.

Important Considerations

• Gas Leaks: If you smell gas at any point, immediately evacuate the area and call your gas company or fire department.

• Heavy Lifting: Ovens are heavy. Get help to avoid injury.

• Disposal: Check your local regulations for proper disposal of ovens.
