Production Training - Detaching Dishwashers

I. Preparation and Safety:

1. Power Disconnection:

   • Locate the Circuit Breaker: Identify the circuit breaker controlling the dishwasher's power supply. This is usually labeled in the electrical panel.  

   • Switch Off the Breaker: Firmly switch the breaker to the "OFF" position.

   • Verify Power is Off: Switch the appliance to a run cycle to see if the unit attempts to operate.

     • Carefully unplug the dishwashers' power cord from the outlet under the sink or, 

     • If hardwired, use a voltage tester to ensure no power is present at the junction box under the sink.

2. Empty the Dishwasher:

   • Ensure it's empty: make sure there are no dishes/dirty or clean in the dishwasher.

     • Dishes can make the unit unnecessarily heavy & potentially damage the plates or the dishwasher.

     • Dirty dishes left in the dishwasher can lead to discovery of future mold growth, during later reinstallation.

3. Water Supply Shut-Off:

   • Locate the Properties Water Shut-Off Valve: it's a good idea to find this valve & shut it off before embarking on any activity involving disconnecting water lines.

   • Locate the Water Valve: Find the hot water supply valve connected to the dishwasher's water line, typically located under the sink, with the water line routed in the direction of the dishwasher.

   • Turn Off the Water Valve: Turn the valve clockwise to the "OFF" position under the sink.  

   • Relieve Water Pressure:

     • Place a bucket or towels under the water line connection to catch any residual water.  

     • Carefully disconnect the water line from the valve and the dishwasher's inlet.

     • Allow any remaining water to drain into the bucket.

4. Drain Line Disconnection:

   • Locate the Drain Line: Identify the drain line connected to the garbage disposal or sink drain under the sink.

   • Loosen the Clamp: Use pliers or a screwdriver to loosen the clamp securing the drain line.

   • Detach the Drain Line: Carefully detach the drain line from the garbage disposal or drain.

   • Drain Residual Water: Hold the drain line over a bucket to drain any remaining water.

II. Disconnecting and Moving the Dishwasher:

1. Remove the Access Panel:

   • Remove the 2 screws holding the access panel onto the dishwasher.

   • Store the screws so they aren't lost.

2. Disconnect Electrical:

   • Open the service panel associated with the electrical connections for the dishwasher & pull out the Black, White & Green/Bare copper wires.

   • Unscrew the black wire combination wire nut. 

   • Unscrew the white wire combination wire nut.

   • Unscrew the green & bare wire combination wire nut & possibly a bare wire loop over a green screw in the box. 

   • Loosen the 2 screws from the strain relief pinching the wires in the junction box.

   • Pull the wires from the box & reattach the wire nuts to the black, white & bare copper wire.

3. Disconnect Water & Drain:

   • Using a screwdriver &/or pliers, remove the washing machine drain hose. Some water will drain out.

   • Using A wrench or pliers, carefully remove the water supply line from the machine. Some water will drain out. 

4. Remove Mounting Screws:

   • Locate Mounting Screws: Open the dishwasher door and locate the 2 mounting screws that secure the dishwasher to the underside of the countertop. These are usually located along the top edge of the dishwasher frame.

   • Remove Screws: Use a screwdriver to remove the mounting screws, place the screws in a small ziplock bag & place inside the dishwasher.

5. Detach from Countertop:

   • Open the door of the dishwasher enough to slip both of your hands just inside, with your palms up.

   • Lift the unit slightly & gently pull the dishwasher forward, ensuring it is detached from the countertop.

   • The front legs may need to be adjusted to allow movement.

6. Move the Dishwasher:

   • Prepare the Area: Clear a path for moving the dishwasher.

   • Protect Flooring: Use blankets or cardboard to protect flooring from scratches or damage.

   • Careful Lifting and Pulling: Dishwashers are generally not heavy, however they are awkward & hard to get a grip on. Enlist the help of another person, if possible. Carefully carry the dishwasher out of the production area.

   • Avoid Dragging: Do not drag the dishwasher across the floor, as this can cause damage.

7. Hose and Cord Management:

   • Coil the water line, drain line, and electrical cord (if applicable) neatly.

   • Place all hardware associated with the dishwasher in a ziplock bag, and place in the dishwasher.

   • Place the drain line in the dishwasher, but dispose of the supply line.

     • Unless directed otherwise.

III. Post-Disconnection:

1. Inspect Connections: After moving the dishwasher, inspect all connections for leaks or damage, cap any connections that are leaking with 3/8" or 1/2" screw on caps.

2. Clean Area: Clean any spills or debris from the area where the dishwasher was located.

3. Cap Water Supply: If the dishwasher will not be used immediately, cap the line to prevent leaks.
